Business IT

IT support for small business

Most small businesses out here do not need a managed services contract and a ticketing system. They need someone who knows their setup, answers the phone, and can be on site when it matters. That is what I do.

Who I work with

  • Trades and contractors running from home or a yard
  • Farms and rural properties with an office and sheds
  • Shops, cafés and businesses on the main road
  • Professional services and consultants working from home
  • Small teams of two to twenty people

Why it matters

Enterprise habits, at small business scale

Twenty-five years in IT and managed services means I have seen what goes wrong at scale, and what stops it. Those habits are worth just as much to a five-person business: know where the data is, know the backups work, and know who has access to what.

  1. 01

    Know where everything lives

Which systems hold your customer records, quotes and invoices, who the accounts belong to, and what happens if a device is lost.

  2. 02

    Backups that are tested

A backup nobody has restored from is only a hope. I check that yours actually brings the data back.

  3. 03

    Access under control

Staff set up properly when they start and locked out properly when they leave, with multi-factor authentication on email.

  4. 04

    Documented, not in my head

Your setup written down and handed to you, so you are never dependent on one person's memory, including mine.

How it works

No contract required

We start with a visit so I can see how the business actually runs and what it depends on. After that you can call as things come up, or we can agree regular checks on backups, updates and security.

Either way, you get a clear price before work starts, and a plain-English note of what was done afterwards.

  1. A look at the setupWhat you run, what it depends on, and where the risks are.
  2. A short list of prioritiesWhat needs doing now, what can wait, and what it costs.
  3. The work, done properlyOut of hours where a job would interrupt trading.
  4. Ongoing, if you want itRegular checks, or just a number to call when something breaks.

Questions

Common questions from businesses

Do I need to sign a managed services contract?

No. Most businesses out here call when they need something. If you would rather have regular checks on backups, updates and security, that can be arranged, but it is not a condition of working together.

How quickly can you respond if we are stopped?

Where a business cannot trade, I aim to get to you the same day. Tell me what has happened and I will be straight with you about timing rather than promising something I cannot do.

Can you work with our existing IT provider or software vendor?

Yes. I regularly deal with software vendors and telcos on a client's behalf, which saves you sitting on hold and explaining the setup to someone new each time.

Do you handle Microsoft 365 migrations?

Yes, including moving email across from an old provider, setting up accounts and licensing correctly, and making sure security settings are in place before anyone starts using it.

What about staff who work from home or from the ute?

That is normal out here. Remote access, mobile devices and connectivity on the road are all part of setting a small business up properly.

Want a second opinion on your setup?

Tell me what you are running and what is frustrating you, and I'll tell you what I would change.
